Saurdal pumped storage power plant
Saurdal power plant and pumping station are located in Suldal municipality in Rogaland county, and form one of the largest hydroelectric power plants in Norway.
The power plant was commissioned in 1985-1986, and utilises the water resources and waterfall at Blåsjø, Norway’s largest water reservoir. Main watercourses: Otra, Førreøna, Ulladalsøna.
The power plant has four generators, two of which can be reversed to pump water back into the reservoir instead of producing electrical power.
Architect Egil Sorteberg has designed the portal building and other buildings and been responsible for the design of the machine hall inside the mountainside. Statkraft’s conservation plan has proposed listing Saurdal Power Plant. This includes the exteriors of the portal building, the downstream generator building and the gatehouse.
